New Immigrants Share Their Stories

Uploaded on May 2, 2011

The students of Newcomers High School in Long Island City, which specializes in teaching recent immigrants, and those of St. Luke's, a private middle school in Manhattan, have come together to dialogue about differences and combat bias. The Building Bridges project was created through a collaboration between Newcomers' teacher Julie Mann, and St. Luke's teacher Kim Allen, who met in 1999 through a Facing History workshop. Ms. Mann's class of English-learners exchanged letters with their St.Luke's "buddies", and in the first of several meet-ups this year, received help editing their personal immigration stories. In return, St.Luke's students are preparing research papers on immigration informed by the interviews they conducted with their Newcomers buddies. Several Newcomers' students will also create video diaries, in hopes of sharing their personal stories with a wider audience.

The student video diaries, a book of their stories and more information about their project, can be found at http://www.niot.org/nios/newcomers.

Dream Land: An Immigration Story (Newcomers High School)

"The history of my family is like a ship which meets a storm. In my generation, the sun is coming out. My whole family was born in China. My parents were born in a dark age when China was poor and had no food."

In this video diary from Newcomers High School (Long Island City, NY), student Weifeng details his family's history and immigration from China, how his life is changing in the U.S., and his hopes for the future. "My life is changing in a dramatic way," he says. Now 18, he volunteers with the Model UN and dreams of opening a small business in California.

What a joy is to see how you have grown and changed throughout the 2014'2015 school. You came to Newcomers School eager to learn but a little shy and nervous. Some of you could hardly say your name on the first day of school. As your English improved, your confidence grew. You learned not only a new language but also a new culture as well. So many changes! But you accepted the changes and tried your best. Not only so, but you´ve made new friends. You have learned about accepting people for whom they are, and that everyone is not exactly like you. I am so proud of your accomplishments. I care for you so much! I know that you will succeed and meet the new challenges at your new school just as you have here. Don´t forget who you are and the things that are important in life as you move on. Don´t forget the lessons learned or your friends made, Don´t forget the NEWCOMER SCHOOL. Don´t forget me either because I won´t forget you all ever.
